Water

Water should be considered and managed as a precious resource. In 2007-08, the NHS in England consumed an estimated 38.8 million cubic metres of water and generated approximately 26.3 million cubic metres of sewage at a cost approximately £145 million.

Water is a contributor to the carbon footprint of the NHS and currently is not metered or measured consistently. The management, distribution and disposal of water contributes to the overall carbon footprint of the NHS.

This section provides information to support water efficiency, with helpful hints, template management and action plans, best practice examples and a list of useful resources.

Across the country over 10% of all water is lost through leakages once it has left the water suppliers infrastructure.

The monitoring and reporting of water use will act as a driver for reducing water use and wastage at all levels of the organisation.
