New National SD Indicators - consultation open

Defra is developing a new set of sustainable development indicators to meet the Government’s commitments to transparency and sustainable development, and is carrying out an informal consultation for 12 weeks from 24th July 2012. The indicators are intended to provide an overview of the UK’s progress towards a more sustainable economy, society, and environment. The indicators are intended to provide an overview of national progress on key issues that are important economically, socially and environmentally in the long term.  Read the consultation document and complete survey

The presentation discusses the problems faced in developing strategies for reducing carbon footprint, using an example at Musgrove Park Hospital where they are diverting funding that would normally go to utility companies to the estate and patient care.

Kings Fund Report - Sustainable Health and Social Care: Connecting environmental and financial performance

As financial challenges for the health and social care sector increase, so too does the need for services to be delivered in ways that are environmentally sustainable. Sustainable Health and Social Care: Connecting environmental and financial performance is based on a literature review and stakeholder consultation carried out by The King’s Fund on behalf of the National Institute for Health Research and the Social Care Institute for Excellence. The report provides an overview of current knowledge about the environmental impacts of health and social care and examines the evidence for a connection between sustainability, productivity and other system objectives.
