Better hospital food should be law

Professor Tim Lang, a government adviser on nutrition, has said that the government needs to do more to improve poor quality meals in the NHS. “Improving hospital food would bring great benefits to many millions of patients, but it would also inspire consumers to choose healthier food when out of hospital care and support British farmers to go even further to improve their produce,” said Prof Lang. “By doing this, it would support a shift towards a more sustainable diet in the country at large, which we urgently need to achieve.” For more information, visit the Press Association website.

Sustainability South West and Natural England haev teamed up to present PLANTING IDEAS...for a Better Green Infrastructure, master class series. The master classes are an opportunity for all those engaged with the investment and delivery of green infrastructure (GI) across the South West to further explore and share the multi functional benefits that GI provides. Each session is a chance to learn from national academics and experts, discuss issues and apply your knowledge to your place, and aims to help you ensure delivery of better GI in new or regenerated places, and sustainable communities in villages, towns and cities across the South West. 

Food 2030 launched

Ensuring food security is just as important to Britain’s future as energy supply, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Hilary Benn told delegates at the Oxford Farming Conference today as he unveiled the Government’s food strategy, Food 2030.

The Food Strategy sets out the challenges facing Britain in maintaining a secure food supply at a time of rapid population growth and climate change, and following the big price increases seen in 2008 following droughts and the rise in the price of oil.

A new report published by the Sustainable Development Commission finds that eliminating waste, cutting fatty and sugary foods and reducing meat and dairy consumption would make the biggest contribution towards improving health and reducing the environmental impacts of the food system.

Setting the Table: Advice to Government on priority elements of sustainable diets, commissioned by Defra, assessed the environmental and health impacts of changing patterns of food consumption. It concludes that there is strong evidence that many changes in consumption which benefit the environment also have the added advantage of improving nutritional health in the UK.

A short presentation given by Elane Macdonald from North Bristol NHS Trust, introducing the work being done by the catering department at North Bristol NHS Trust. They are the first organisation in the South of England and only the second Hospital Trust in the country to be awarded the “Food For Life Catering Mark” from the Soil Association.
